Apostille, Explained
An apostille is an official certificate from the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) that authenticates the signature, seal or stamp of the public official on your document.
It confirms who signed or sealed it, not the contents, so it's recognised in other Hague Convention countries without further FCDO or embassy legalisation. We'll handle the jargon; here's exactly what one looks like.
How does it work?
1. Notarise or certify: your document is first signed, sealed or certified by a public official or notary in the UK.
2. FCDO legalisation: the FCDO checks its records and attaches the apostille certificate to authenticate that signature or seal.
3. Ready to use abroad: your document is now recognised in any Hague Convention country. No embassy step required.
